Well hello there! If you’re here for the first time then a big welcome to you, and if you’ve been here before then welcome back 🙂
My name’s Gary Butterfield, by day I’m the managing director of G-Rex Fitness, a UK based health and fitness company, and by night I hit the roads. I’ve been cycling since early 2012 when I bought my first racing bike off a friend ready for my debut triathlon. This wasn’t any triathlon, it was the Helvellyn Triathlon, apparently one of the hardest in the world, so some serious training was required! I’d never been on a racing bike before, a character building experience some would say, but I soon got the hang of it!
I have loads of mates who do stupid challenges for charity, one even trekked the North Pole in 2012! I wanted to get a piece of the action, so I looked in to going with him on an expedition through the Sahara Desert but unfortunately I couldn’t afford it. I started throwing around the idea of doing my own life-altering event for charity and when I was in Australia for a friend’s wedding I decided it was going to be a cycle up the east coast!
The east coast is the big goal here, but I’ll have to get some serious prep both logistically and physically for a bit of mileage under my belt, for this very reason I’ll be putting together smaller events to get me there. These events will no doubt be UK based and will be all about the distance, a few examples are:
- The Great Yorkshire Bike Ride – cycling from one side of Yorkshire t’other
- Le Tour de Yorkshire – cycling the Yorkshire Le Tour de France route a month before the pros arrive
- Coast to Coast – cycling from the east coast to west coast in England’s narrowest point
- John O’Groats to Lands End – cycling from Scotland’s highest point to England’s lowest point
By following my blog you can keep up to date on everything to do with the build up to the big day, including daily updates from the support van over in Australia!
Thanks for reading 🙂
